《팽창하는 표면》은 물의 부피와 그 물리적 속성을 회화적 표면 위에서 다루는 작업으로 구성된다. 형태를 갖지 않는 물은 일정한 모습을 유지하지 않지만, '팽창하는 표면'은 부피를 지니며 공간을 점유한다. 이 전시는 그러한 보이지 않는 물의 부피가 어떻게 드러날 수 있는지를 질문에서 출발한다.
전시장에 놓인 작업들은 평평한 캔버스를 기반으로 하지만, 더 이상 평면에 머물지 않는다. 구겨지고 눌리며 변형된 표면은 내부에서 작용하는 힘에 의해 밀려나고, 그 결과로 굴곡과 팽창을 만들어낸다. 이러한 표면은 이미지를 재현하기보다, 압력과 밀도가 작용한 흔적을 드러내는 상태로 존재한다.
관람자는 작품을 ‘읽기’보다 ‘마주하게’ 된다. 표면 위에 드러난 형태는 특정한 대상을 지시하지 않지만, 물이 지닌 부피와 흐름, 그리고 그것이 남긴 흔적을 물질적으로 환기시킨다.
이 전시는 평면과 부피 사이의 경계를 고정된 것으로 보지 않는다. 오히려 하나의 표면 안에서 두 성질이 동시에 발생할 수 있는 상태를 제시하며, 회화가 물리적 경험으로 확장될 수 있는 가능성을 보여준다. 결국 《팽창하는 표면》은 보이지 않는 부피가 어떻게 표면을 통해 드러나는지, 그리고 그 과정에서 생성된 형태를 어떻게 감각할 수 있는지를 탐색하는 자리이다.
주로 실내에서 그림을 그리는 작가는 초기에는 의자나 테이블, 도자기, 벽지 등의 실내 풍경과 창문을 통해 비치는 외부 풍경들을 따뜻하고 세밀한 시선으로 그리기 시작했다. 점차 그 실내 정물 속의 문양이나 패턴들을 반복적으로 그리며 그 속에서 자기만의 추상적인 이미지들을 창조해 내기 시작했다. 최근엔 꿈과 현실의 경계를 뛰어넘는 초현실적이고 뒤틀린 세계 속에서 느끼는 아늑한 마음의 평정심 속으로 침잠하기 위해 백팔배를 하는 구도승의 자세로 끊임없는 고뇌와 구도의 과정을 수많은 붓질로 대체하며 작업활동을 이어오고 있다. 장준성 작가는 캔버스 위에 오일 물감으로 작업을 한다. 다양한 색의 조합에 천부적인 재능을 보이며 대상과 배경의 조화와 대비에 대한 많은 고민을 한다. 배경의 뒤틀림을 강조한 최근 그의 작업 '왜곡' 연작에서 우리는 종일 외부와 단절된 채 방안에서 작업을 하는 작가의 고뇌와 단절감, 왜곡되어져 보이는 바깥 세상, 급속하게 변해가는 시대에 뒤쳐져 있는 듯 보이지만 그럴 수록 그림 속으로 빠져들어 쉼 없는 붓질을 통해 왜곡된 세상 속에서 자신만의 나른하고 아늑한 마음의 평화를 추구하는 작가의 일상을 엿볼 수 있다.
Junsung usually draws indoors and so his main objects are interior scenery and designs such as chairs, porcelains, tables, sofas, wallpapers including pets, dolls or landscape seen through windows, etc. He likes to find and derive certain abstract images from familiar things...for example, from patterns on the sofas, wallpapers and porcelains. By drawing those patterns on canvas repeatedly and numerously, sometimes he gets immersed in absence of ego like trance and feels healed by himself like a monk practicing a hundred-and-eight-bows. Junsung works primarily with oil and is very much interested in fancy combination of colors and harmony or contrast between object and background. In his recent series of 'distortion' that are characterized by transformation of background, you can see the solitude and despair of an artist painting all day long at home feeling isolated from outside world, fallen behind the times, indifferent to relationships with society, sinking deeper and deeper into himself. But, also you can see how he cures himself and finds inner peace doing endless brushwork on canvas and so indulging in drowsy, cozy trance in a surreal twisted world by trascending the boundary between reality and dream.

장준성 작가는 골프 사업을 하는 집안에서 태어나 어린 시절부터 프로 골퍼가 되기 위해 골프를 해왔으나 가족의 권유로 이십대 후반에 골프 용품 사업에 뛰어들어 거의 이십년 간 골프 용품 업계에서 일했다. 독학으로 그림을 배워 다수의 전시를 통해 먼저 작가로서의 입지를 다져가고 있는 동생, 장준혁 작가의 지속적인 권유와 조언 하에 의해 작가는 2015년부터 역시 독학으로 그림을 그리기 시작했고 곧 열정적인 작업 활동을 통해 독창적이고 섬세한 그림들을 그려내기 시작했다.
Junsung Chang was born and raised in Seoul in a sports family that runs many golf businesses and so he, like his cousins and brothers, started playing golf to become a professional player when he was an elementary school boy. He continued practicing golf until late twenties and he chose not to purse professional golfer any longer but to join in golf businesses at his early thirties. Then, for the next twenty years, he was in golf goods business like other cousins selling clubs and balls, etc. However, about six years ago, by the repetitive recommendation of his younger brother, Junhyok Chang, a self-taught artist, he suddenly determined to start painting by himself at home and soon has become a very passionate and unique self-educated painter as well under continued counsel of his younger brother.
